Adoption Process
No appointments are required to visit! This means you can stop by anytime during business hours, Tuesday to Sunday, from 12 PM to 5 PM. We will remain closed on Monday.
Adoption can be a fairly quick process, depending on if the adopter is ready and if the pet is cleared by our medical team. If applicable, GMHS will also check with any landlord or homeowner prior to finalizing an adoption.
GMHS does run on a first come, first serve basis for adoption applications, and we accept up to three applications on one pet.
There are times when a pet is available to accept an application on, but they are waiting for their spay/neuter surgery, meaning they cannot leave the shelter until altered.
Besides looking for a love match between person and pet, GMHS wants to make sure that all members of the family, both two and four legged, approve of the new pet. GMHS will perform a meet-and-greet between potential four-legged siblings to make sure everyone in the home will get along.
All cats and dogs adopted from the GMHS will already be spayed or neutered and will have been given their basic inoculations, including rabies if the animal is old enough. All animals are microchipped.
Please call our Adoption Team at 804-693-5520 ext 102 with questions about the adoption process.
