Adoption Process
No appointments are required to visit! This means you can stop by anytime during business hours, Wednesday to Sunday, from 12 Pm to 5 PM. We will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday.
If you are considering adoption, submit an adoption questionnaire prior to your visit. All adoptions are performed by appointment, which allows our adoption team to contact your veterinarian for records and/or your landlord for permission as well as discover the personality and pet that will be best suited for your family. We will continue to conduct adoptions by appointment. This ensures prospective adopters have the benefit of uninterrupted time with our team members and pets during meet and greet appointments.
Please call our Adoption Team at 804-693-5520 ext 102 with questions about the adoption process.

More Details about the Process
Adoption can be a fairly quick process, depending on if the adopter is ready and if the animal is cleared by our medical and behavioral team. If applicable, GMHS will also check with an adopters current veterinarian and landlord prior to adoption. There are a few items the adopter can bring to expedite adoption even further:
Besides looking for a love match between person and pet, GMHS wants to make sure that all members of the family, both two and four legged, approve of the new pet. GMHS will perform a meet-and-greet between potential four-legged siblings to make sure everyone in the home will get along.
All cats and dogs adopted from the GMHS will already be spayed or neutered and will have been given their basic inoculations, including rabies if the animal is old enough. All animals are micro-chipped.
- Veterinary records for other pets in the household.
- Copy of renter's lease agreement giving permission for new pet.
