Helen's Gift
Helen's Gift was established at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society to honor Helen Harrington Hutcheson's extraordinary spirit and her abiding love of all creatures great and small. Statistics show that up to 25% of all animals surrendered to animal shelters nationwide are pets who are surrendered because of owner illness, aging, or death. This often overlooked and under-served population are animals in crisis - their stories are poignant and heartbreaking, but thanks to Helen's Gift, they have a chance for a happy ending.
If you or someone you know is no longer able to care for a pet due to owner aging, illness or death, contact GMHS to find out how Helen's Gift may be able to help. |

Helen Harrington Hutcheson (1920-2010) led an extraordinary life. Orphaned at 16, widowed at 21, she turned tragedy into triumph and eventually re-married and became a mother, celebrated nurse, and community activist. But the constant in her life was the help she always gave others. And the constant by her side was always an Airdale - or two. When she died in January 2010, her dogs Rusty and Jack were with her.
