Shelter Manager
Summary:
GMHS’ mission is to improve life for all animals by providing temporary shelter, compassionate care, community support, and education. We are proud to be fierce advocates for animals in our care and maintain a 96% live release rate with over 1,700 animals cared for annually (Fiscal Year 2021).
We are currently hiring a Shelter Manager to lead our animal care and adoption teams. This is a full-time, salaried exempt opportunity with benefits. The Shelter Manager will report to the Operations Director and collaborate with the vet care and Highway to Home transport teams to ensure industry leading care for every shelter animal.
The Shelter Manager is primarily responsible for leadership and oversight of customer service, adoptions, intakes, scheduling, training, animal care, and employee performance in these areas. The Shelter Manager directly supervises Animal Care Specialists, Adoption Specialists, Enrichment Specialist, and Closing Coordinator. The Shelter Manager reports directly to the Operations Director, collaborating to achieve shelter goals.
The Shelter Manager is committed to professionalism at all times, maintaining a positive attitude and bringing challenges, concerns, and opportunities for improvement to the Operations Director, practicing solution-based problem solving. The Shelter Manager serves as the primary manager on duty, communicating needs and responsibilities to the Closing Coordinator in her absence. In the absence of both the Shelter Manager and Closing Coordinator, the Operations Director or person appointed by Shelter Manager will ensure sections are checked for employee accountability and consistency of animal care.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has supervisory experience, at least two years of experience in animal sheltering, strong customer service experience, excellent communication skills, and is well organized. Candidate must be goal-oriented, have unwavering integrity, and have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of two years’ experience with an animal welfare/shelter/rescue organization
Working Conditions:
Reports to: Operations Director
Classification: The Shelter Manager is a full-time salaried exempt position and expected to work a minimum of 35 hours weekly. Every effort will be made to maintain a 35-hour per week schedule; however, the number of hours required weekly can reasonably be expected to exceed 35 hours as conditions warrant. As an exempt position, overtime compensation is not provided.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Hiring and onboarding of new Animal Care Specialists and Adoption Specialists
- Scheduling, training, and corrective action of Closing Coordinator, Animal Care Specialists, and Adoption Specialists
- Monitoring employee time clock and cards and verifying time daily
- Supervising adoption team to ensuring excellent customer service, processing of applications in less than 24 hours, prompt marketing of available pets (photos, bios, marked available), maintaining behavior binders, completing weekly deposit, etc.
- Monitoring animals and care at offsite locations, including Petco cats and GCAC dogs
- Managing intake wait list
- Cross-referencing Lost Reports with Found Reports
- Contributing to a healthy, engaged organizational culture and nurturing team members’ affiliation with GMHS
- Supporting shelter goals, including motivating team members through mentoring, regularly scheduled meetings, and employee recognition
- Hosting daily standup meetings attended by individual contributors; when offsite, delegating hosting duties to Operations Director
- Ensuring the facility maintains a neat, clean, and welcoming environment and reporting any maintenance issues to Operations Director or designated contractor
- Acting as a point of contact for contractors in the absence of the Operations Director, and for other shelters
- Handling accidents and emergencies, ensuring proper documentation and course of action following protocol
- Maintaining open, timely communication with Operations Director, ensuring visibility of changes, challenges, successes, and concerns
- Actively participating in weekly team meeting with Operations Director, Business Manager, and CEO
- Other duties as deemed necessary by senior organizational leadership

- Work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays
- Work may include visits to or assistance at multiple locations including but not limited to Gloucester County Animal Control, Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic, Petco, and partner shelters.
- Fast-paced and changing work environment, which at times may be stressful or emotionally charged.
- Exposure to dead, sick, injured, and/or dangerous animals
